My wife and I a terrible at keeping up with movies we want to see either in the theater or to rent. We have not seen some great looking movies but this week we knocked two of my list. Last weekend I watched Hotel Rwanda with my Dad and I almost got tickets to go see him speak in Ocala this Friday but thats ok, and this weekend Dawn and I went to see Narnia, finally. They both are great movies and I will watch both again.
This movie touched me very deeply. I have been to Haiti twice and seen what this type of violence and do to a poor country. Civil Justice to countries like these is so different than what we are a custom to. The brutal acts that happened in Rwanda in 1994, one tribe trying to totally wipe out another rival tribe is disgusting in its self and that is not to even dig into the fact that many of Huto tribe that were killing the Tutsis were Christian baffles me. But what disturbed me more was the fact that the West did nothing. No United Nations, no Belgian army (the country that helped in creating the mess in Rwanda, no French intervention (they were supplying the Huto militia), no American forces (though not our war but we should have stepped in). Nothing from the West. We just sat back and watched the horrifying pictures on TV and watch the genocide of nearly 1 Million Rwandans’. The quote that sticks out and cut me deep was something to the affect of, “No one is coming to help from the West, your not white, your not a nigger, you are worse you are African.” Could the decision to help be based on the continent they live on. We (the white folk) have used and abused Africans and left them to deal with the mess we created and it makes me sick. What is past is past and today is the day to stand up and make a difference to change the current state that the African continent is headed. There are many groups to be a part of DATA, One, Compassion International, FAME just to mention a few that I know of. What are you going to do to make things better for these people? Do you care? Are they worth our time and energy? While my ultimate goal is their eternity being spent with Jesus Christ, there is still time between today and Jesus return that we can help make things better and if we let our light shine, they will see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. This is the first step in seeing their eternity being spent in the right place.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
I love C.S. Lewis’ works. I have been a fan for a while. Sometimes I find that I have to read some of his works over and over again before I begin to start to get them. I know I don’t have all the symbolism down in his Narnia books but man what portrayal of the gospel of Jesus Christ was this movie. The powerful Lion; the Jesus figure, the Witch whose grasp on Narnia and cunning ways are much like the devil. It is such a good story. My favorite part is right after Aslan is sacrificed for the life of Edmond the traitor, Peter summons the army into battle and all I could think of was the Spiritual battle this is being fought by humans and spirits against each other. There are those fighting to let the good news of Jesus Christ be heard so that it can change the lives of the who do not know of the love and forgiveness that is found in Jesus and those the devil is using to make sure that the good news is never heard. I found tears in my eyes as I saw aspects and elements of the life of Christ and the only reason He can to earth portrayal in a different and creative way. I can get over how well done it was either, of course many say it was to much like Lord of the Rings but that was ok to me and I’m sure Tolkin and Lewis are ok with that too.
