Volunteers

July 14, 2005

I wrote this piece a little while ago for our church news letter. I thought I would share it with you all.

Have you ever thought about your personal responsibility as a Christ-follower? This is not meant to attack anyone but to spark a thought and personal inward look at our ourselves. I have found the most satisfaction in life when I serve. I might grumble at first but when I don’t let the devil get that foothold and get out a serve somebody or do something for someone I feel great satisfaction. Jesus came to serve not to be served. The single person to ever walk the earth that deserved to be served, came to serve. The example left by him has set count less millions of people throughout the Christian era to volunteer in some capacity somewhere. If we are commanded to have the same attitude as that of Jesus Christ (Philippians 2) then how can we sit around and not serve. If Christ’s whole mission was a mission of service all the way to the cross, how can we not serve at all? How can we think it is someone else job? This isn’t a guilt trip. It’s a time to really think about what you are doing as someone who calls themselves a Christ-follow.

Swinging back to satisfaction. Part of my satisfaction comes from the knowledge that I am making a impact on someone’s eternity. Whether it is showing them Christ for the first time by serving them or by teaching Kindergarten – 2 Grade Children’s Church where we are planting seeds of God’s love and care for them, their eternity is being affected. God has talented each of us with different gifts and talents to be used to serve the people He created. We have to look at our like and dislikes and find those talents and gift that we can use or to talk with someone who can help you discover them. Don’t wait another day find an area in the church, local or foreign mission, or a little old lady who needs her house painted or lawn maintained to help and forge ahead today the example that Jesus left for us.
